Book in progress

People don't resist change. They run out of room for it.

I'm writing a book about why good change efforts stall, even under good leaders, and what it takes to leave people enough room to actually adopt something new.

It starts with my doctoral research. I set out to study how school leadership affects whether teachers stay, and expected the answer to be leadership style. It wasn't. The leaders were strong. What wore people down was how change arrived, how fast the next initiative landed, and whether support was built in or handed out as a favor.

I've seen the same pattern everywhere I've worked: in classrooms, in sales teams, in 15,000-person system rollouts and in a youth softball club. Technology adoption is just adoption. The people are the whole job.

I'm writing it in the open. Ideas get tested here first as essays, and the best ones become chapters. Subscribers get early drafts and a front-row seat to how a book comes together.
